ARTWORK, BOOKLET

The Antipodes

The Antipodes was a collaborative project which I completed with my father, Michal Lapinski, a retired psychoanalyst and published writer, with whom I emigrated to Australia from Poland in 1984. The project addressed the subject of living between two culturally and linguistically distinct homes. The underpinning of the project was my dad's bilingual poem The Antipodes, about our experiences as new arrivals in Australia. On the basis of this poem, I created watercolours and pencil drawings, which were then combined as interwoven graphic art in a printed, hand-stitched booket. The artwork, booklet and poem text in Polish and English were displayed in an exhibition at Town Hall Gallery in Hawthorn in 2024. I also built a bilingual website where you can view the original artwork, the graphic art, and the poem. I've included here some images from the project, including original drawings and paintings, graphic art for the book as well as the booklet layout.

Graphic art used in the booklet was created using composites of drawing and watercolour versions of the same subject matter.
